What a locking wheel nut is
Most cars have one special nut on each wheel to stop thieves taking the wheels. It needs a matching key, usually a small socket kept in the glovebox, the boot or with the spare wheel or repair kit. Without the key, the wheel can't be taken off, so a puncture can't be fixed.
First, look properly
- Check the glovebox, the door pockets and under the boot floor, around the spare wheel or tyre repair kit.
- Look for a small plastic box or bag, or a socket on the tool kit.
- Ask anyone else who drives the car, or the garage that last worked on it.
Getting a replacement key
Many locking wheel nut sets come with a code card, often kept with the handbook. With that code, a main dealer or the nut manufacturer can usually order a replacement key. It can take a few days, so it doesn't help if you have a flat right now.
Don't force it
Hammering a cheap socket onto the nut, or using the wrong tool, can damage the nut and the wheel and make removal harder. If you have a flat, it's safer to call someone with the proper removal tools.
